Most dogs fall into two categories: those that love to swim and those that avoid the water at all costs. Even if your pooch is an enthusiastic swimmer, that doesn’t mean she should have an all-access pool pass. Any dog can drown in a backyard pool, so rule number one is never let your dog swim or hang around the pool without supervision!

A self-closing fence around your pool is essential, particularly in homes with puppies, nonswimmers, and elderly dogs. If you have young children, you likely have a fence already. If not, there are a variety of options to fit a range of budgets and tastes. Some may think fences spoil the backyard aesthetic, but having one offers invaluable peace of mind.

The next priority for pool safety is to have a clearly marked, easy-to-use exit. Place a potted plant or flag near the steps and leave it there permanently, so the dog can easily find the exit if she becomes disoriented. Make sure the water covering the top step is shallow enough to allow your dog to comfortably enter and exit the pool. If not, you’ll need a pool ramp.

Another safety measure is to install a pool alarm that alerts you whenever the surface of the water is broken. There are many types of pool alarms, some made especially for dogs where a device on the collar alerts you if the dog falls in. This type of alarm is essential if you have a backyard pond that’s impossible to fence.

Avoid using soft pool covers. A dog can easily mistake one for a solid surface and step onto it, or fall in and become trapped underneath it.
